Berlitz Manchester has a legal responsibility to safeguard young people under the age of 18. The school, therefore, places some restrictions on what any student under the age of 18 can do, and it is a condition of acceptance in the school that these restrictions and rules are understood, accepted and adhered to.
Students under the age of 18 are considered children under British law. All students are expected to abide by UK laws which relate to the restriction of activities to under 18-year-olds; in particular with regards to the purchase and consumption of alcohol and tobacco.
Berlitz Manchester primarily caters for students over 18 years old. Whilst we welcome students who are 16 or 17 years old, it must be understood that we do not provide 24-hour supervision and therefore it is very important that parents and guardians consider whether students under 18 are sufficiently emotionally mature to act responsibly during their stay in Manchester while attending courses at our centre. (Children under 16 can enrol for lessons on a 1-to-1 basis. The special conditions that apply in this case can be seen in our ‘Safeguarding for Children under 16’ policy, which can be consulted on this website.)
Students who are 16 or 17 years old will study in classes with adults.
Unless staying with their parents or legal guardian, all students aged 16 or 17 will be accommodated in homestays where the main carer will have had an enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check, and other adult members of the household will have signed a Children’s Act declaration. Please note:
- Your child will travel between the school and the host family and vice versa unsupervised.
- Your child will not be supervised during their free time, e.g. at lunchtime, or between the end of their lessons at the school and returning to their homestay.
- Berlitz Manchester requires all students aged 16 or 17 to return to their homestay by 10.00 pm.
Berlitz Manchester’s social programme is not compulsory, nor is it specifically designed for this age group. Certain activities may not be suitable for students under 18. The school does aim, however, to provide a number of afternoon and evening activities which are also suitable for 16- and 17-year-olds. All school social activities are supervised by school staff, who can assist the students taking part in the activity. However, it should be understood that students attending evening social events are expected to arrange their own travel home. We strongly advise all students under 18 to return to their host family with a friend, or preferably by taxi, particularly when it is dark.
At least once a month, Berlitz Manchester organises full-day trips on a Saturday. Students aged 16 and 17 are able to go on suitable Saturday excursions, and we will ensure that there is a sufficient number of supervisors. 16- and 17-year-olds must stay with the supervisor throughout the trip.
Although some activities are free, others, including the Saturday excursions, will have to be paid for.
Although the homestay hosts will provide your child with breakfast and an evening meal, you should ensure that your child has sufficient money to pay for lunches at or near the school, as well as for transportation in and around the city.
We strongly advise students aged 16 and 17 to book our taxi transfer service, to avoid any problems upon arrival in Manchester (unless they are travelling with a named friend or relative).
Berlitz Manchester endeavours to liaise with parents, guardians and registered agents whenever there are concerns about a student under 18.
The information above is included in our general Terms and Conditions, which must be signed by a parent or guardian.
Signing the Berlitz Manchester Terms and Conditions implies parental consent has been given for all matters pertaining to 16-and 17-year-olds.
