Our History

The Origins of Berlitz

Maximilian Berlitz founded Berlitz in 1878. While managing a successful language centre in the United States, he needed a French instructor. He hired Nicholas Joly, a promising assistant. However, when Joly arrived in Providence, Berlitz discovered that Joly spoke no English.

At the time, Berlitz was unwell and unable to teach, so he instructed Joly to teach only in French. Joly pointed at objects, acted out verbs, and engaged students directly in the target language. When Berlitz returned, he was astonished to find that the students had made remarkable progress.

This experience led to the creation of the Berlitz Method: teaching a target language exclusively in that language. This immersion-based approach, which focuses on comprehension and communication, revolutionised language learning. It continues to shape language education worldwide.

The Berlitz Method

The Berlitz Method remains central to our approach. It emphasises natural language acquisition through real-life conversations, not memorisation or grammar drills. From the first lesson, students speak and think in the target language.

The method has evolved over time, incorporating modern techniques and flexible learning formats. Today, Berlitz offers online e-learning, one-to-one sessions, group classes, and immersive experiences, such as the Total Immersion programme. These options meet the needs of today’s global learners.
